Visit Meteorology DepartmentWelcome to Sri Lanka — a land of timeless beauty, golden beaches, ancient temples, lush green hills, and smiling people. Officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, this tropical island lies in the heart of the Indian Ocean, just below India. For centuries, Sri Lanka has been called “the Pearl of the Indian Ocean” for its breathtaking scenery and warm hospitality. Today, it stands as one of Asia’s most fascinating destinations for travelers who seek culture, adventure, and relaxation in one unforgettable journey.
Sri Lanka is an island country located in South Asia, between latitudes 5°55’ N and 9°51’ N and longitudes 79°41’ E and 81°53’ E. The island is separated from the southern tip of India by the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar. Covering about 65,600 square kilometers, the country features beautiful coastlines, mountain highlands, and fertile plains that support agriculture and tourism. The capital city is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, while Colombo is the commercial and financial hub.
The island’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Two main monsoon seasons bring rain to different parts of the island at different times, ensuring that some region is always sunny and travel-ready. The southwest monsoon (May–September) affects the western and southern coasts, while the northeast monsoon (December–March) refreshes the eastern and northern regions. Temperatures average 26–32 °C on the coast and are cooler in the hill country.
From misty tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya to pristine coral reefs around Pigeon Island Marine Park, Sri Lanka’s diverse landscapes promise something for everyone. Its lush rainforests, dry plains, waterfalls, lakes, and rivers support more than 3,000 species of flowering plants and a rich variety of wildlife including elephants, leopards, sloth bears, whales, and dolphins.
The history of Sri Lanka stretches back over 2,500 years. According to ancient chronicles, the first Sinhalese settlers arrived from northern India around the 6th century BCE. Buddhism was introduced in the 3rd century BCE by Mahinda Thera, the son of Emperor Ashoka, which led to the establishment of great cities such as Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. These ancient capitals became centers of culture, art, and architecture — their stupas, monasteries, and irrigation tanks still stand as symbols of advanced engineering and spirituality.
Over the centuries, the island’s strategic location attracted many foreign traders — Arabs, Persians, Chinese, and later Europeans. The Portuguese arrived in 1505, followed by the Dutch in 1658, and finally the British in 1796. Sri Lanka gained independence from Britain in 1948, and in 1972 it became a republic under its current name. Today, visitors can explore this layered history through UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the Sacred City of Kandy, and the Galle Fort on the southern coast.
Sri Lanka’s greatest treasure is its people — known for their warmth and hospitality. The population of around 22 million includes a mix of ethnic groups: Sinhalese, Tamil, Moor, Burgher, and others, living together in harmony. The country officially recognizes Sinhala and Tamil as national languages, while English serves as a common link language, especially in business and tourism.
Buddhism is the religion of the majority, but Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity are also widely practiced. Visitors will notice colorful temples, mosques, and churches throughout the island. Sri Lankan culture blends traditional values with modern lifestyles — expressed through dance, art, music, festivals, and food.
Every month brings a festival to celebrate. The most important is the Vesak Festival in May, marking the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of the Buddha. Streets glow with lanterns and decorations, creating a magical atmosphere. Other notable events include the Kandy Esala Perahera — a grand procession featuring drummers, dancers, and beautifully adorned elephants; Thai Pongal and Deepavali for the Tamil Hindu community; and Eid al-Fitr and Christmas celebrated by Muslims and Christians.
Sri Lankan cuisine is a delicious reflection of its diversity. The national dish is rice and curry — a fragrant plate of rice served with spicy vegetables, fish, or meat curries. Coconut, chili, and aromatic spices define the flavors. Popular dishes include string hoppers, kottu roti, hoppers, sambols, and pol roti. Tropical fruits like mangoes, papayas, pineapples, and bananas are abundant year-round.
At Cook With Nimali, travelers can join authentic home-cooking experiences to learn how locals prepare these flavorful dishes — an unforgettable way to taste Sri Lanka’s heart and soul.
Despite its small size, Sri Lanka is one of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots. Nearly 30 % of the land area is covered by forests and protected reserves. The island boasts over 60 wildlife parks and sanctuaries managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Elephants, leopards, crocodiles, deer, sloth bears, and hundreds of bird species thrive here.
Marine life is equally stunning. Off the coast of Trincomalee and Nilaveli, you can experience whale and dolphin watching, snorkeling, and diving. Pigeon Island National Park is one of the best coral-reef sanctuaries in South Asia, where visitors can swim alongside colorful fish, sea turtles, and reef sharks.
Sri Lanka’s economy is driven by agriculture, manufacturing, and services — with tourism playing a leading role. The country is globally known for Ceylon tea, gemstones, spices, and textiles. In recent years, tourism has become a vital part of the economy, contributing to job creation and sustainable development. Visitors are encouraged to support community-based and eco-friendly tours that help local families and protect the environment.
After facing economic challenges in recent years, Sri Lanka is showing strong signs of recovery with a renewed focus on responsible travel, renewable energy, and digital innovation. The country continues to welcome travelers with open arms, offering unforgettable experiences at affordable prices.
Few destinations in the world pack so much diversity into such a compact space. Within a few hours of travel, you can move from white-sand beaches to cool mountain peaks, from ancient ruins to vibrant markets. Whether you are an adventure seeker, nature lover, or cultural explorer, Sri Lanka has it all.
Best Time to Visit: The west and south coasts are best from December to April, while the east coast is best from May to September. Because of the different monsoon patterns, you can travel somewhere in Sri Lanka at any time of year.
